The municipality, situated in the west of Skåne on the coast of Öresund , was formed in the 1960s when the small market town of Lomma was merged with the large rural district of Flädie. In january 2009 the population amounts to about 20 450 inhabitants. Prominent features include good housing standards and the nearness to Öresund which affords ample opportunities for a rich outdoor life.
The local tax rates for 2009 are 29:63/100 kronor, including tax to Region Skåne.
The employment situation is good both for men and women. More than 4,800 work within the municipality, mainly in the service sector and in manufacturing businesses.
There is considerable commuter activity from Lomma: about 6,700 of the inhabitants work in other municipalities, chiefly in Malmö or Lund, and about 2,600 people from other areas commute to work in Lomma.
The travelling time Lomma-Malmö, Lomma-Lund and Bjärred-Lund is 20-25 minutes. On weekdays, buses run every half hour on the routes Bjärred-Lomma-Malmö and Bjärred-Lund, at peak hours at shorter intervals. Between Lomma and Lund there is half-hourly traffic on weekdays and qarter-hourly at peak hours. The distance Lomma-Malmö is 8 kilometres , Lomma-Lund 10 km , Bjärred-Lund 10 km and Bjärred-Malmö 15 km .
Preparations are in progress for local passenger train services to start after 2016 on the route Kävlinge-Flädie-Lomma-Malmö.
Within the municipality there are more than 100 associations, societies and clubs offering a wealth of activities and interests.
A 27+18-hole golf course at Habo Ljung has been completed. In addition to golf, the leisure and recreation area of Habo Ljung invites rambling, jogging, scouting, dog training and horseback riding.
Wide beaches attract swimmers and sunbathers in the summer; in the winter you can go for a swim indoors at Pilängsbadet. Other tempting water activities are windsurfing and dinghy sailing both in Lomma and Bjärred. In between the bridges in Lomma Harbour there is space for about 200 boats.
Both Lomma and Bjärred have libraries with generous opening hours and an ample stock of reading, music and films as well as access to many computer bases. There are computers fitted for visually impaired persons, and both libraries have access to text telephony. Efforts are directed on children´s activities in collaboration with the child health service, schools and pre-school institutions, as well as on individual service to old and disabled persons, a project called “boken kommer" (the book comes to you).
A lot of cultural experiences are provided for children, in conjunction with schools and pre-school institutions. Programmes for children and families are arranged.
